Hi everyone,

I just moved into a new house. The builder just poured two deck piles for me. However 1 of the piles was overflowing with concrete. So I leveled it off.

However the second is about 1 ft. shorter than the sono tube. The rebar is sticking out from the concrete and it looks like there is very little aggregate in the concrete. Should I get them back to top off the sono tube and cover the rebar? Is the lack of aggregate a problem?

Should they have leveled the overflowing concrete from the one pile?

Lots of questions. Any information would be appreciated.

Thank you.

If the top of the pier is levelled off and 6" above grade the pier should be okay.

The bar can be sawed off with a metal blade in a sawzall. I imagine the contractor would be taking care of that for you.

I'm wondering why there isn't an offset post base? They can epoxy in a 5/8 threaded rod & use an ABU base, but usually it's wet set during the pour? This also depends on what part of the country you are in & what the local codes are though...

See piers & foottings on the decks-ca site.

I'm located in Canada. I looked at some of the decks built in the area and no piers were being used on any of the decks. Posts were directly atop the concrete. I have put up a quick page with some pics of the piles poured.

Anymore info based on these pics is appreciated.

That is a pier, just like the example I tried to show you. Piers are what hold decks up... a pile is something totally different, used in docks and a number of other applications.

I'm thinking the contractor may be having a hard time here... he'll more than likely get back and complete as time permits. There is nothing wrong so far that can't be addressed.
