I live on the top floor of a 5 story newly constructed condominium. We have terraces outside each of our units. Bricks and sand were originally used for decking but we had water problems. The decision now is whether to use natural redwood decking versus composite redwood decking. We are interested in knowing the pros and cons of each, for example how long each could be expected to last, what will each look like in 5 or 10 years, maintenance issues for both types and any other issues that you might be aware of. We live in Northen Virginia. Thank you

I don't use redwood for the decking anymore as it is second growth, and won't last. I use Cambara Mahogany, Brazilian redwood hardwood (Massaranduba), Ipe or trex for our decking... on a trex deck I've often used redwood railing since they don't lay flat to the weather persay.
The trex & brazilian redwood is warr. for 25 yrs

I am a paint guy and not a construction guy so that is where my answer is coming from.
What I like about the composite products is that you don't have to seal them or other wise try to make them look like furniture as some people try to do. So from a maintenace stand point they are way better and for a homeowners association that may mean lower dues.

Have you looked at a product called EON? Natural looking redwood without any of the maintenance. Seen it down, really nice stuff.

EON is 100% plastic... the expansion & heat generation in hotter climates would be an issue, the products elasticity & possibity of cracking from being hit in colder climates?
The feel of plastis is.. well plastic, and the look isn't the best...
There are applications, but I'm not sold personally on 100% plastic as a decking material as yet.
