I'm not a deck expert (just had ours re-built by pros, in fact), but I ran through some some of the same decision processes. Ours doesn't have a hot tub, but has to deal with (at times) massive snow loads.

Our old deck had been cantilevered about 4' out from the beam. The new one is less so, only about 2 or 3'.

I think a lot of it is about appearances. A cantilevered deck just has a cooler, more sophisticated "look" to it.

Does the software take into account the weight of the hot tub? If not, you'll probably want some professional help to avoid nasty surprises (ack!) I've heard that cantilevering is not a job for the faint of heart--the calculations involved (about stresses and weight support) are more complicated and have even been botched by pros. If you cantilever, I wouldn't go too far out!

One more thing, when they put ours up, they put a special petroleum-based liner (kind of a black tape) on the top of the big lam-beam, to protect it from the elements. Cheap insurance; highly recommended.

I looked all over the Weyerhauser sites and couldn't find that program, can you let me know where it is?

I'm assuming you mean a 2x8 bolted to each side of a 4x4 post vs a 4x8 beam atop a post is that correct?

Or do mean the way the balustrade (railing posts) is attached to the deck framing?

What I`m refering to is 6x6 posts with 2 joists bolted to either side type design.The posts will be 16 feet tall.Deck will be 10 feet by 26 feet long added straight out from the existing deck.

i have to think the load bearing capabilities are greater when built this way, as it spreads the load over the length of the joist, rather than just down the post itself.
