we need to build a small deck (or large stairs) over a crawl space to our sliding doors.

Oh and money IS an issue, we don't have much of it.

A small deck headered off like a stairwell, then overlap the decking for access so you can lift off the small access panel.
The access size will depend on what's in the crawl space, if nothing than I believe the code is 18 x 30, that's off hand I someone will correct me if I'm wrong there.
You can frame the access panel that small with barn door type of Z or x pattern of pt 2x4 and screw the decking into those.
So what happened? How did the door get right in front of the crawl space access? :)
