We recently rented a floor sander to do my mahogany deck. (It hadn't been stained or anything for three years.) Well, as they say, experience is the best teacher, and now we've learned! But not before ruining the deck. I guess we went overboard with the sander, and now there are deep ridges, and other unsightly gouges in it. Any ideas? Or, to phrase it differently, "can this marriage be saved?" :)

It sound like you rented a drum sander instead of random osculating disk floor sander.
Floor Drum sander is faster but very unforgiving if you let your mind drift. The random osculating disk floor sander is a lot easier to use it does not sand (cut) away the wood as fast. It works slower and makes it easier to use and control.
Now you may be able to clean up the mess you made in your floor with that but if you removed to much of the wood so your floor board thickness will be ¾ or less when you get done just as well replace the floor to start with.
If you don’t want to do it your self hire some one that knows what he is doing.
