Hi,
The 8 year old home we recently purchased has a vinyl sliding patio door which allows for ALOT of noise in our home since we live next to a busy street. Would it be better to buy a steel door as a swinging door or swing open style door or does it matter? I have heard that sliding door overall allow more noise.
Also, since we already have a frame for the sliding door that we have do we have to hire a contractor to install the new sliding or swing open style door we will purchase?
Thanks!

- patio door, sliding or swing open style?
Patio doors do have more glass area, so that would allow sound transfer more readily.
If you have older single pane glass, when you upgrade to dual (even triple pane) you will notice a substantial difference.
Plus sound transfer from roadways are from the tire @ pavement so perhaps you could place a small barrier or mound to help? That way you'll save your view.
If the view isn't important, then look into french doors or double doors with a smaller window.
I would have a professional install them, there are a lot of considerations to take into account such as flashing exact fit etc. Two men can install them in a day usually so it shouldn't be too cost prohibitive.

Thanks.
If we wanted to keep our current sliding door how could we eliminate all the road noise that comes through the sliding door? We have 11 pine trees that are about 9 feet tall that block some of the noise, but not alot.

A landscaper would be more helpful to you than I would, my guess would be a 8" concrete or block wall 2' high or some similar structure... perhaps a fence & dense bush, or an earth mound?
Wouldn't it be much easier and less expensive just to replace the sliders? They are only a couple of hundred for vinyl?
