I've got a patio out behind my house that i am wanting to put a roof over. I'm tring to figure out the best and easiest way to attach the rafters to my house so they will have the strength they need to hold the weight of the roof. It will be about 12'x15'. I am going to use tin for my roof. Any suggestions??

I know it is common practice to attach the new patio cover over your existing structures roof, but really proper way is to build it free standing.

Go to your local building dept. they will more than likely have a flyer with plans on it for you to use. A lot of areas treat these structures in different manner dependent on things like earth quake zone, wind loads, snow loads, wood species etc.

That is what makes it difficult to give you a beam size or lateral (bracing) support answer.

I do have a generator on the decks-ca site where you can input your own info and get a general size, but it's better to have someone in your area like a structural engineer, buidling official or general contractor have a look.
