In regards to deck loads. What is the difference between live load and static load ? What is the best way to know how heavy a load you need for a deck to design it?thanks

Live loads the the weight of anything on the deck that can be moved. That includes people and furniture.

Dead load is the weight of your MIL. Seriously it is the wegith of the deck structure.

Homes are designed for 40 lbs live, 10 dead.

But you need to check your local codes for decks. Many areas use the same numbers, but others feel that a deck can be crowed from a party and have higher live load requirments.

And anything like a hot tub takes special design.
