I would like to make a three season room on my patio. I was told I needed to pour footings. My question is "Does the footing have to be below the patio slab or can it be along side it. If it does, why?

- patio to three season room
Where are you located... if it freezes the slab which is typically 3" thick moves with the seasons.
A room needs a foundation to support it's weight, to below the frost level so it won't move.
If you're coastal, or in earthquake or high wind areas you need the foundation to bolt the structure down to and secure it.
I think the best would be consult with either the local building permit office, they'll help you do this and most have plans you can use, or a draftsman/architect/engineer, or even a local contractor just to get you on the right path.
