I have two concrete sets of stairs in the front of our house - each in one piece. One is about 40" wide and has 2 stairs, and one is about 50" wide, and has three stairs. These face north, and get very mildew-y rather quickly. I'd like to cover over the concrete with either some sort of wood/fake wood or stone (not concrete). Please write it you can tell me which would be easier to keep clean (stone/pavers/flagstone or wood/plastic/? . I live about 20 miles from the ocean and live in Massachusetts. Thank you very much. This is a continuation from my first post. I forgot to mention that these stairs/top are exposed to weather all of the time, i.e., these stairs are not covered. I also forgot to ask ... would I be better off if we removed the concrete steps altogether (if we were to use treated wood or composite), or is it very expensive to removed them? I'm assuming that if we use stone, we would keep the old stairs (they are 20 years old). Do they sell stone that is thin enough to put onto existing concrete stairs? Please write soon if you can ... I'd like to have this done soon ... Thanks.

I am a coatings contractor in NJ and we routinely use a spreadable stone product from www.daichcoatings.com in situations where a different appearance is desired. The products can be purchased at some larger paint stores. The rollerrock is not difficult to apply and can give you a nice granite like appearance and is slip resistent. We can make it look like flagstone, brick, pavers, etc but this generally requires a fair amount of practice beforehand to perfect the technique. The more sophisticated styles are more like faux painting. The concrete surface needs to be cleaned and in good shape before application. If you go to our website below, look in the gallery (don't look at anything else since it's our new site and still under construction). You can see about 60 or so projects using these products with many before/after pix and it may give you some ideas.

Good luck!
