If this is a NEW dishwasher it should be under warranty and you could void the warranty by tampering with it. The cover is temperature activated and should clip close when cold (you should hear a little click) and open at a predetermined temperature. If this does not happen then the part is probably defective and you usually have to go back to Sears for the replacement part. Whirlpool used to make the Sears appliances but I am not sure if they still do. GOOD LUCK!!!!!
