My toilet runs for a couple seconds every five minutes whether I am in the bathroom or not. What is the cause of this? I looked inside it and I didn't see any running water.

Could either be a leaky float or the flap at the bottom of the tank is not sealing properly. Go to the hardware store and buy a tank kit, it will come with a new float system and new flap. Very easy to install and relatively inexpensive.
