My 25 year old gavanized plumbing is shot. I am planning on replacing it. Are there reasonable (and reliable) alternatives to copper? (which seems to be the replacement material of choice).

I used CPVC...here in the south it is ok to use.

Check your local codes. cpve if usually fine, but does not have the strength of copper....
