My sewer line in the basement backed up a few months ago and i had a plumber come in to snake the line. For some reason he could not get it through the main line so he took my toilet off and went through there, somewhere along the way he cracked the seal( or whatever the top ring that the toilet sits on)and cracked the top of the pipe that sits there. My question to you is, We are now selling are house and we need a quick and cheap way of fixing this problem.Or would it be easier to put a cap on it and let the future home owners deal with it? Any advice would be helpful, as you can see I dont know the first thing about plumbing. Thanks

When you took the toilet out, did you replace the wax ring? In my experience they are a one time use only and cheap enough to not want to take a chance of a leak. Try replacing it and see if that solves the problem.

the wax ring is the first obvious thing that needs to be replaced they are only one time use and should be replaced any time you remove the toilet. they are only like 3-5 dollars to purchase but if the actual pipe is cracked that would be a professional issue but i find it hard to belive a professional would have cracked the pipe simply snaking the drain.the only problem i can see is that if the pipe actually is cracked and you only replace the wax ring water could leak through the crack in the pipe a create some serious water damage under the floor and in the ceilng of the floor below(assuming its on the second floor.)if you're sure the actual drain pipe is damaged you need a plumber. cause once you put the wax ring and toilet back you won't see the leak until the damage is done then the new owners might come after you.
