I am building in an aquarium in my basement, and part of that system is an automatic water exchanger. I have a hose connected to the 1/2" copper cold water pipes that runs to a whole-house filter and make the transition to PVC at that point for the rest of the system. Problem is that the hose fitting is hose x FPT, and as many times as I try to redo it, I can't get the darned threaded fitting to seal. I've wrapped teflon three times up to ten times, tightened firm to harder than I know I should, and no matter what I try I can't avoid a leak.

Anyone out there know the magic incantation that gets a seal to take?

Are you putting the teflon tape on clockwise? If not, it won't seal properly.

I'm running it in the same direction as the threads on the male fitting -- so the tape runs along the threads and not across them.

What WhiskeyJim is saying is, you must put the tape on so that when the fitting is tightened, the tape is being "tightened" as well and not unraveled.
