I would like to build closet shelves using wood. I would like them to be 14" deep so I'm thinking of using 3/4" plywood with molding along the front edge to conceal the raw edge and to provide stiffening. Perhaps I could use 1/2's here. The shelves would be about 5 feet wide and wrap around one side of the closet. I am wondering what is the best way to design them so that any vertical supports along the front edge aren't too obtrusive. I'm thinking of using 1/2's for that. Does anyone know where I can find some detailed plans for DYI closet shelves?

Just received the Feb issue of Family Handyman and there's an article on 'Maximize your closet'. Might give you some alternate ideas on what you could build.
