I have a 9-year old home. When trying to install a new basement toilet, I found that the floor flange is roughly 3/4 inch high, whereas the new toilet had clearance for only about 1/2 inch. The 9-year old toilet had at least a 3/4 inch clearance and sat nicely on the floor. Given the new toilet's 1/2 inch clearance, the new toilet will not sit on the floor, and has a 1/4 inch or so gap around the base. In other words, it sits high on the 3/4 inch flange. The flange is cemented to the pipe going down through the foundation so it would be easy to replace, at least for me. A local hardware store tried to get me to use some shims, but I didn't like that.

Any thoughts? Do they still make toilets with 3/4 inch clearance? I wish the builder didn't put in what seems to be such a non-standard floor flange.

Some of the decorative type toilets have a deeper flange at the base because of their decorative detail along the bottom of the bowl. erik

I'm not understanding you as far as the clearance goes. Are you dry fitting your bowl without a wax ring in place? Why would you want to tear up the flange, when you can probably get away with a wax ring with a horn. This would make a nice seal, and you can grout and / or caulk around the base of the bowl to compensate for the gap. Grout 1st, then let it cure, then apply a nice bead of white adhesive caulking, then smooth out with a damp sponge. Bam! problem solved, and the total cost= less then $10.00. Good luck !

The flange mentioned is not the closet- flange connected to the drain...but the flange cast into the bottom of the toilet to meet the closet-flange when setting. Some toilets have a deeper flange cast into them allowing a closet-flange sitting above the floor to clear. Many of the newer toilets have a very shallow flange cast as that is less material and so less money. When setting at these close tolerances a 4" plain wax ring (without plastic horn) will allow you to gain a bit of room. Again decorative sometimes will have a larger depth. erik
