Recently the chalking around my tub cracked. The reason for this is because when you stand in the tub, take bath or even put pressure on the sides of it the tub moves away from the wall. It drops by about 1/4 inch to a little less than 1/2 inch.

Would anyone know what causes this and how to fix this. I am afraid I may end up in my kitchen one day (lol)

It sounds like your tub does not have the proper support. A stringer 2x4 or 2x6 is installed opposite the apron side to compensate for weight and stress. Remove the access panel and try to look against the back wall to see if you have a stringer or ledger board. You need to fix this soon because it's putting stress on the drain line.

thx for the reply plumber tom!!

Okay my tub is manufactured by Bootz model is 12 years old but very much the same as the Kona PORCELAIN ON STEEL supported by 3 walls. Question is how do I get to the access panel? I am assuming that I need to do this via the wall.

If this is the case I am apt to say that I best leave this to a pro then - correct?

Any idea about cost factor with these types of repairs so that I have a general idea. I am assuming that all 3 walls will need to be ripped down, re drywalled and retiled also is this correct?

Depending on your budget and what you are able to spend. You may want to look at the project as remodeling instead of repairing. A nice whirlpool tub can be installed for an upgrade. These type of tubs have a pump and jets. You will pay alot more then a standard 5' steel tub, but have you ever experienced a whirlpool bath? It's very soothing. For a cost effective repair, have your plumber rip out the old 1, install a $90.00 steel tub,new waste and overflow, new faucets. You probably won't get an exact match on the tile, but you can do tile work yourself to save the money. Good Luck, Tom
