Tub Spout Nipple

I need to replace the existing tub spout nipple with one that is a half inch shorter in length.

How do I remove the old one and more importantly install the new one without damaging the threads?

I've thought of using a strap wrench but I'm not sure how well that will work.

Anybody have any tricks or tips?

Hi Paul. I have an easy way for you to accomplish this job. Remove the old spout CCW. Buy a spout that contains an "O" ring and allen screw clamp.Cut off the male adapter with a tubing cutter leaving at least 3 and 1/2" of copper stubbed out. Simply install the new spout. Some spouts even supply the allen key to tighen it up. Good luck. Tom

If you do decide to change the nipple, an internal pipe wrench might do the job.

I definitely want to change the nipple.

I have never heard of an internal pipe wrench. How do they work and where are they available?
