How do I tell whether I need a softner or a water filter? We can't install ourselves so are dependent on a service to do it and they want to sell all kinds of "stuff" Is it necessary? We only have two of the name brands in our area, Rayne and Culligan and I don't know who to trust

I can understand your hesitancy. Some can be real aggressive on their sales. You can take a sample of your water and have it analyzed. Some environmental health departments will do this for free. Amazingly enough some plumbers can put in systems at less cost. I just take my sample to my supply house and they recommend what is needed.
