Another water question...every time our washing machine fills up or the shower upstairs is running, the water guage in the basement makes a horrible "clicking" noise that we can hear all the way upstairs. What is that?

I get a similar clicking, which I believe is from expansion and contraction of the ABS (black plastic) waste vent stack. In our case, it's quite noticeable during and after someone takes a shower.
This wouldn't make sense in your case during a washer FILL--but might be what's happening if the washer is DRAINING.
If it's such expansion/contraction, it's probably just one of a myriad of house noises. I never have gotten to the point of tuning ALL of them out myself, even after 20+ years of home ownership.

If by water gauge you mean your municipal water supply water METER....it is common for Rockwells and others to "tick" when in full-demand load other times when the demand is less (like a trickle from a sink), the ticks are less frequent and quieter.
If this is to what you were referring, it is a totally normal operational sound.
