I am hoping someone can help me. I have a bathtub that is seldom used downstairs, and the drain is stuck in the open position. It is the type of drain that is controlled by a little lever above, and basically the lever and whole mechanism is stuck. I have had two plumbers come by who said that to replace the drain itself, they would need to open the wall, and its a huge job. But both felt that the drain was stuck open from nonuse, and probably has buildup of either rust or lime causing it to "freeze" in the open position.
My question is: is there a product that I might be able to use to dissolve the rust/lime buildup to see if I can get the drain opening again without replacing the whole thing?

Did they try unscrewing the cleanout cover on behind the lever and lifting out the linkage. I've never had one I couldn't get apart with a little aptitude. But, if its really stuck, its probably inside the linkage inside the riser behind the tub. Anything you could pour into the back would have to be in such great quantities in order to guarantee you reach the linkage and loosen it. There would be no guarantees you would get it then. If they tried to remove the lever (and they were experienced plumbers) you may have to open the wall to solve it.
