I removed the strainer(?) from my bath tub, and purchased a new kit to replace it. The handle lever was no longer working to activate the stopper up and down so I wanted to replace it with one that I could manually do by hand. My mother in law is totally disabled and lives with my wife and I and has to take baths not showers. Anyway, when I went to replace the old drain the threads on the new part are much bigger(threads ****her apart?) than the old one. The diameter is the same but the threads don't match. The house was built in the late 60's so I didn't think it would be a big deal. Now I just have the drain pipe underneath the tub butted up against the bottom of the tub with nothing connecting it. Where do I get a replacement? The big box home stores are clueless. Thanks in advance for any help and sorry for the length of this message.

You need to go to a plumbing supply store. Now most of them specialize in construction and remodeling. Not repair parts. But ask around. In my area there is one call The Plumbers Friend that only handles repair parts and has stuff for most anything.
Also try an old established hardware store.
And the big box stores "sometimes", special on weekdays, you will find older semi-retired trades people that work there and might know. In this case don't trust anyone under 50

You can do one of two things, you can buy a cheep waste and overflow from the big warehouse hardware store, take the shoe out of the kit (complete with strainer), then install the shoe on the old waste and overflow. Of course you would have to remove the old shoe from the tee, but its not too difficult. I've done it alot. The other thing you can do, which I perfer, is to simply replace the whole waste and overflow. Its much easier than trying to remove the shoe only. If you buy a waste and overflow there are directions inside the kit, so don't throw them away!
