OK, here's the deal. I recently repaired/replaced part of my bathroom floor from where over the years water had dripped from the shower and rotted a spot in the corner. In the process, I laid some new lino. and put in a new wax ring for the toilet. I think I was successful with the ring, because I don't see any water coming out from under the toilet (I opted not to caulk, should I?), I was under the house in the area under the toilet and pulled down some insulation so I could check things out. There was some moisture and brown spot where the backing touches the drain pipe. Question (#2...): How can I tell where the leak is? About 6 months ago I had a plumber come out and replace the tub drain which was leaking. If I can't tell as a DIY'er, how do plumbers tell where the leak is coming from? Any suggestions or advice are appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Good plumbers use, experience, logic and intuition to determine where the leak is coming from. They will look at the leak, try to see if it has run lines, how old the leak is, measurements to the location, and operation of local fixtures. Truely its not an easy process. I typically go through a step by step process that requires me to be on site. But crawling under the unit, flushing it, and listening often help.
