Bvplumbing
I have a leaky toilet-I traced the leak to the plastic mechanism below the tank that connects the water valve to the tank. I turned off the water valve, but still have significant water leaking from the tank. I'm assuming that I need to replace the plastic thing-gasket(?) Are there different gaskets for different toilets? Will I need to syphen the water from the tank first? There is still a small amount of water in there.

Any help is appreciated.

You may simply need to tighten the nut that holds the fill valve to the tank. If the nut is loose it will leak as you state.

Boy oh boy did I get a lesson in plumbing yesterday! The gasket was bad-I tightened it and eventually it worked it's way loose and started to leak again. After returning the wrong size gasket replacement, I put the correct one on and we are good to go for now. My next move is to replace the water flow valve as that one is ancient and won't shut off completely, but that one's going to require a real plumber as they soldered the original valve on instead of pressure fitting-and soldering is not on my list of items to learn any time soon!

Thanks for the response. For now, we are thumbs up with the dry bathroom.
