Recently my sump pump has been turning on approx every 20 minutes to discharge incomming water. For the first 14 years in the house there has been very little, if any, water. I did have an automatic sprinkler running for an hour each day over the summer, but the sump has now been running for the last 4 weeks after the sprinkler has been turned off.

Is there a way to determine if it is just ground water or a more serious problem? What kind of a discharge hose should I use outside to carry water away from the house and prevent freezing in the discharge line itself?

If you are in a very wet season, you could be having infiltration. The way to test is to take a sample of the water and have it testes. If it is from a broken water line, it will have chlorine in it, which will show up in testing. If it doesn't then its probably ground water (unless you are on a well).

If you are on a well, your water should have salt in it from the water softener.

Very few materials will resist damage from freezing. Some of the new PEX materials will not freeze, but they can't be left out in the sunlight either.

Hi,

I know its a old post but i would like to help you. It might not have anything to do with your problem but your discharg pipe might not be slopeing right to dishcarg the water. I would sugest installing a a check valve about 3 feet above the pump. This will prevent water from comming back into your pit. It is something to think about.

Thank you for your reply. I do have a check valve so that is not the problem. I am on a well with a septic. The only thing that is in the back of the house is the septic tank. The water running into the pit is clear, but it is constant. Is there a way that I can determine if the waste water is running into the ground? The main discharge pipe to the septic is just above the pit.
