I have a gas water heater that is nine years old. This weekend I noticed that the valve where you hook up a hose to drain? (bottom side of heater) was leaking. I tightened it up and the leaking stopped for a few hours but then started again. It is leaking about 2 cups/ 24 hours. The emergency valve does not seem to be leaking nor is the bottom of the heater.
Should I spend the money to call out a plummer to see if the heater can be repaired or do I call home depot and get it replaced?

If it is just the valve you can get a cap to put over it. It will have hose thread and you want to put a hose washer in it, if it does not come with one.
Any hardware store should have them.
But look carefully the water might be leaking out of the WH and run out and around the outside of the valve.

is easily replaceable. There is most likely a multitude of maintenance things you also should be doing, i.e. inspecting/swaping out sacrifical anodes, flushing tank for sediment, testing and possibly replacing your T&P valve (removing it checking backside for sediment even if it passes a test), etc.
