Hello, I'm new to these boards..I'm really hoping someone can help - I've been on the internet for weeks trying to solve this, and we can't necessarily afford a plumber.
My husband and I just bought a new home - it's only 3 years old.
The toilet in our main bath on the 2nd floor won't drain. We've used a plunger, and an auger (a 'snake') and it still won't drain. We never use this bathroom..and it wasn't until a guest used it did we realized there was a problem. We have no kids, and neither did the previous owner, so there's no chance of an unknown toy being stuck...
We've jiggled the handled, and held down the handle, and it just won't drain! I don't understand what could be the problem...the toilet on the 1st floor, and the toilet in the master bedroom both work fine.
Any suggestions! I don't know what to do!
Thanks in advance.

Just because they did not have any kids does not mean that there is not toys dropped into it. Visiting grands kits, nieces/newphews, etc.
But it could also be adults - dropped pencil, sunglass, toothbrush, etc.
But there could other problems such a defectlively made toilet.
But you said that it did not "drain".
EXACTLY what happens? Does it overflow? Does it stay as high as the rim unless you bail it out? Or is it slow draining? Is there any bubbling or gurgling?

Sigh, you're right...I suppose ANYTHING could be in there that I'm not aware of.
Well, it hasn't overflowed or anything. You flush, then it sloooowly twirls around and ALMOSTS overflows. Toilet paper doesn't go down at all, and has to be scooped out (yuck!).
It does continue to drain a 'little' bit, but not enough to drain all the water in the bowl.
Also, I should mention (sorry) that every 4th or 5th flush it will work totally normal. And then bam! Back to it's old tricks.
Thanks for your qwick reply, by the way!

Get a 5 gallon bucket and pour the water down the bowl and see if it flushes properly (VORTEX) if so then lift the tank cover and check the water level in relation to the fill line.
THEN you can try filling the tank 1" (inch) below the over flow tube HOLD the handle down with the cover up and look at the flushing action.
If the tank over flows you have a partical stoppage IF it flows perfectly then you need to adjust the flapper (tank bulb) OR tell folks to hold the handle down longer.
