i recently replaced my hot water heater, and it bangs very loudly when it is refilling after use. i have been told that it could be due to a build up of sediment, but find that hard to believe because it is so new. any other thoughts on what could be causing the banging?

Depending on how cold the incoming water is could cause this condition.

THAT IS WHY boiler feed water is sent through a hot water return to temper the water from causing thermo shock.

You may also have excessive pressure try throttling down the supply valve slightly and see if this helps
