I installed a new vanity and plumbing hardware. Now I'm having a sewer gas problem coming up through my vanity sink drain. I installed a new trap below the original waste line going out to the street in the same postion as the original.
So in theory since the trap is below the original waste pipe going to the street. The water in the trap should block or keep out the gas.
Also when I drain the sink filled with water it empties quickly and with no leaks. But the smell from the gas is temporarly high then diminishes.
What can I do to get rid of the gas smell?

Before you installed the new trap lower then the original did you bother to try to snake up the line to make sure the old waste pipe was full diameter?
If not then your vent could be partially blocked and thus would not give the proper circulation as originally designed.
This is one of the many reasons I am against wet venting.
I would remove the trap look in the drain line with a flash light and try to get a snake to go up the bent a few feet to make sure it is fully open.
