My toilet is a low flush toilet, it flushes once but then the water will back up. This is a new problem having started on Friday. We've plunged a gozillion times, then later it drains slowly but it won't fill up. Then when you flush again it backs up. I went to Lowe's and bought an air regulator and put it on where the washing machine is per the instructions from the plumbing assistant at the store and then poured hot water down the pipe on top of the house and plunged again. But no luck it's still sitting there. What do I do now?

If the guy was a real "plumbing assistant" he would be making around $22 per hr not minimum wage, so I would take his advice with a grain of sand.

This sound like a partial stoppage try using a toilet auger not a plunger and 90% of the time it is a Q tip or feminine product someone allowed to go down the bowl.

By the way HOT WATER does not remove hair/ bottle caps or other things people throw down a toilet.

Hot water mixed with fecal matter or urine does cause a bad smell.

If you do not believe me take a bottle cap and let it soak in cold or hot water and see what happens.

Shame you wasted hot water that may have ruined the wax seal on the floor flange under your toilet and thus may cause a future leak

What kind of "air regulator" did you get? And where it is installed on the washer? And what is it suppose to do?

I can think of a couple of different types of air regulators and non of them would be installed on a washing machine nor would they have anything to do with the toilet problems.

Instead could this be a hammer arrestor or an air admittance valve? The air admittance valve could affect the toilet, but only if the drainage system had been designed for one and the existing one was defective.
