WHEN WE ARE USING OUR WASHING MACHINE IN THE BASEMENT, OUR PIPES ARE REALLY RATTLING AND OUR SHOWERS UPSTAIRS LEAK FROM THE SHOWER HEADS. THEY ARE ALSO STARTING TO LEAK WHEN WE FLUSH THE TOILETS OR USE OTHER WATER SUPPLIES LIKE THE DISHWAHER ECT.

PLEASE TELL ME THERE'S AN EASY FIX, NOT A MAJOR PROBLEM. THE HOUSE WAS BUILT IN THE LATE 70'S.

THANKS FOR ANY HELP!

Sounds like you have several things going the main problem is the hydraulic shock causedby the sudden closing of quick closing valves lke a washings machine, some toilet fill valves and a dishwasher as these have Solenoid valves and the velocity (GPM) may be to xcessive for your system.

To many folks install piping with total disregard to the pressure and pipe sizing and thus you get this condition

One thing about plumbing I learned water seeks its own level so if you have a leak in the basement it does not effect a shower head drip upstairs..

Therefore using this logic one would repair the shower body using washer, seats, cartridges or diverter what ever the case would be THEN start at the top problems and work down
