When we had our home built 2 years ago, we asked that a "rough in" bathroom be prepared in the basement. I now want to try to equip the area with fixtures (toilet, sink, etc) but am really confused about what this big hole in the floor is for. It is circular, about 2 to 3 feet in diameter and about 2 feet deep. My floor is concrete but the hole is down to the dirt under the concrete. What is this hole for and what type of fixture is supposed to be on top of it? The remainng pipes sticking out of the floor can be identified but not the hole. Any help appreciated.

It sounds to me they have dug that for a sewage ejector tank because your sewer line is above your basement and you need to pump your waste to the sewer line

It could be for a shower/tub drain. Space is left for the trap and the fact that until a specific unit is selected the exact location of the drain is not known.

The hole sounds to big for a shower or a tub, is the sewer line above your basement or below the slab,find the outside cleanout should be within 2' of the foundation outside your house and how many fixtures was the bathroom roughed-in for? if you find the cleanout outside take the plug out and stack a tape measurer in there and see what the total depth is.
If there is a 3" pipe where that hole is it if for a ejector , is there a toilet flange installed for a toilet?is there any pipes in the wall?Be a little more specific
