We have had problems with the kitchen sink draining slowly. When we run the dishwasher it backs up into both sides of the sink and won't do down until we plunge it. So...we took out our garbage disposal thinking that it had something to do with it. Got it all put together, now you can only run the water for about 15 seconds before it backs up into the sink. When we plunge the water down it goes into the dishwasher. Everything I read has info about an air gap. What is this, do I need it, and how do you know if your sink is vented in the first place????
Help.

If you run water and a few seconds later the sinks start to fill it could be a stoppage down steam and plunging forces the past a small opening in the grease obstruction.
Try snaking the line and see if that helps.
If you had a bad vent you would have a foul smell or a gurgling sound as the water was draining
