I live in a high-rise apartment building and 5 days ago a pipe burst 4 floors above my bathroom. The building managers did not turn off the water immediately. Although my bathroom appears to be unaffected (no water leaks) there was a STRONG odor filling up my entire room and bathroom when I got home. It smells like a combination of mildew and cigar smoke. The smell has been diminishing, but I am concerned about mold and mildew in the walls causing health issues. The maintenence men told me the plaster walls cannot get wet and therefore mold cannot grow. They are saying the smell is unrelated to the pipe burst. Can someone please tell me if plaster walls can be affected by mold? Can't the wall structure (wooden beams, etc.) become wet as well? Also, what is the easiest and most cost efficient way to test for mold on the interior of walls? I would really appreciate any insight anyone can provide!

Better call a lawyer BEFORE you get hit by a car or lightning after all today there are lawyers able to sue about anything.
I am sure some lawyer will be able to find something that this leak caused you to lose possibly a few months of your life or maybe you will in 30 or 40 years suffer shortness of breath.
I would call poison control and ask about the toxicity you may or may not have been exposed to.
One can never be to careful when it comes to health issues, like mold, asbestos, carbon monoxide, out dated medicine, air pollution, global warming SUN RAYS if the windows are not of the proper tint, radiation, radon, E coli or the worst cancer that hit man kind in my opinion ACLU
I also would never drink any water bottled in plastic bottles as the plastic in the sun may leach very toxic chemicals into the water or other liquids.
Today with global warming one has to be especially on the look out ( NOT NYC as right now we are having the coldest winter in 2 years) But who is to say the weatherman is not lying to us there for I went out and bought 4 different types if thermometers as we cannot trust just trust anyone.
