Is there any way to replace the faucet valve without taking the shower out to get to the plumbing? If not can I just replace the handle with a new one. I don't know what brand, 20yrs old not working great, looks like poop.. Help!!!!!

If you know the shower brand in many cases you can replace the divertor if applicable and the hot and cold spindles /stems and the valve seats and the handles and index buttons is applicable and the stem sleeves and escutchions.
