Someone told me there is a way to mount a check valve or some sort of replacement for the traditional air gap kit that is used with dishwashers. This prevents backflow and normally mounts on the kitchen sink, but I like the suggestion of not mounting it there.

Is there such a thing/device/item? If so, what is it called and where might one find it?

A check valve is NOT considered a back flow preventer because a "check" is not a positive shut off.

They are prone to failure and can cause a lot of noise through a plumbing system.

Air gaps and air breaks are in the model codes for a very valid reason and many dishwashers already have a built in air gap as people hate seeing them installed through a counter top

IIRC some codes don't require an air gap, other means can be used.

The classically way is to loop the drain line up so that the it is against the bottom of the counter top.

Then water can't backup into the DW until the water in the sink is about 1" from overflowing.
