when intalling a drain like for a sink or tub,are you supposed to put on a lot then squeeze it out by tightening down or just put on a thin amount?
it seems like after i tighten down on it after a minute or so it is loose again and needs to be tightened again.

Great question, like how much flux to apply prior to soldering.
I normally place a bead of putty under the flange squeezing it flat leaving about an 1/8th of an inch thickness and then when tightening the fitting, tub or kitchen strainer etc. I just keep tightening until no more putty squeezes out.
Some folks put it on so heavy it cannot compress properly and later after they leave more putty oozes out and thus you have a leak as the flange is not tight enough
