In the december timeframe our water pipes made a great deal of noise when any water was used. It sounded like a chain saw, foghorn, etc in the walls.

In January I replaced an old toilet with a new Toto toilet and the noise problem went away. The sound is now back, louder than ever. Both toilets are brand new.

What else can be causing this problem ?

1- Bad pressure reducing valve hunting for the correct setting

2- loose washers

3- Solenoid valve closing to fast

4- Quick closing valve like a toilet or ice maker or washing machine or sprinkler system

5- Lousy installation where the installer did not bother to size the piping to prevent excessive velocity (hydraulic shock)

6- No water hammer arrester (air chambers) installed

7- No provisions for expansion and contraction of piping

8- Check valves causing vibration

9- Excessive pressure

And then of course non of the above

thanks for the input. I think I found the problem. We ( help from) the local water board tech) think the problem is with my outdoors Mansfield anti syphon faucet. This faucet near the water entrance point for the house. The noise is the loundest in the wall behind where the faucet is outside. I wish I could just turn it off but I have finished ceilngs in my basement covering the shutoff. I will try getting a Mansfield repair kit.
