I use Terrazzo base when possible, then caulk the outlet with lead and oakum

Thanks for a quick reply...I already have ceramic tile, and have designed a mosaic for the floor tiling. What I'm wondering about is how I'm going to fill the base. I know I could make a wood frame and use mortar or cement to shape the slope, but I heard of this styrofoam-like stuff that is already sloped and has a hole for the drain. All you have to do is cut it to size, put it over the drain, line it with this plastic sheeting, and tile it. You can also make the threshold out of this material. I'm wondering what this stuff is, and if it the easiest way to build the shower base, and if it would be durable. Thanks again for your advice.

I have no idea about the material your talking about I use either a Terrazzo base or custom make the pan out of 4 PSF ( pounds per square foot) sheet lead.

This way I do not have to worry about any replacement for at least 30 years

I would avoid anything flexible, like styrofoam when dealing with tile. Check out the forumn on http://www.johnbridge.com/vbulletin/index.php There are many people discussing building a shower pans. I believe Kerdi is one of the products you can buy in a kit to preslope your pan.

I don't know what the other person is using, but part of the Kerdi system is a foam base.
