I have a home with a crawl space and I have discovered that one of the cast iron drain pipes connecting to the main drain pipe has rust and cracked. What is the best way to repair this drain pipe? Also is there a way to loosen up the piece of the pipe still connected to the main drain pipe?

Cast Iron can be quite heavy and brittle ans if you cut it wrong and it is not properly supported you can end up cracking a lot more piping then you expected.

Prior to cutting the piping has to be supported and it has to be determined on how one will cut out the bad sections.

Either snap cutter or metal grinder wheels or burning out the old lead joint

and installing new CI into the existing hub.

Your better off calling a licensed plumber and do not allow her /him to go with plastic if you have CI already

I think I will try one more time to remove the pipe myself taking care not to damage it. Is there a solution that will loosen the pipe up for me? Also I see where the threads of the pipe are in and screwed into hub that there is a piece of metal sticking out of this area. What is that a metal strip used to secure the connection or? The pipe that was attached looked like it simple rusted out. This drain at its fartherest most point did have PVC connected to it. You do not suggest PVC over Cast Iron? A friend recommended that I should change the system over from ci to PVC beacuse it would be cheaper any thoughts on this? Should I just have the plumber run the entire drain for me rather than have him simple replace this pipe? (The drain pipe will be use for the kitchen sink and a washer unit and then it will lead into the main drain of the home.) I thank you for your assistance in advance.

Also what action will the plumber take to repair this situation? Will he cut the new cast in and make another connection or will he replace the cast iron piping? What it the approximate cost of this type of repair? Thanks again.

How long as your friend been a plumber? How can he can suggest a material that is known to make a lot more noise then cast Iron, has much shorter radius fittings thus causing more stoppages and the reason it is cheaper is the skill level to install plastic system is about 9 points higher then a flower.

Normally I see plastic piping installed with band iron and not properly supported with clevis hangers at the correct points thus allowing for bellies.

No one ever bothers to mention the toxicity of the primmer and glue used for connecting these pipes and the respiratory protecting and flammability and how certain rodents love to gnaw through plastic to keep their teeth sharp.

You asked for an opinion then you asked your friend Why not just ask the friend and not bother looking for a second opinion?

Tell your friend you found an even cheaper way, all you have to do is go to a local fire department and ask them to give you the old 4" fire hose and use clamps connected to the pipe and hose and I am sure it will be a lot cheaper then doing it properly

Q- Also what action will the plumber take to repair this situation?

A- The legitimate plumber will take what action is necessary to make the repairs gas and water tight

Q-Will he cut the new cast in and make another connection or will he replace the cast iron piping?

A- That would depend on how much piping has to be replaced

Q- What it the approximate cost of this type of repair?

A- I would estimate slightly under $160,420 plus tax UNLESS it comes under capitol improvement BUT then of course the price may go higher if confined spaces are encountered as OSHA would want certain requirements to protect the workers in case of a cave in and proper equipment is set up for ventilation and disposable clothes and considering you have other plastic there it is considered TOXIC waste by Green peace and it has to be documented where it is being disposed of.

This was only a guess as I have no idea how many miles of piping need to be replaced how much raw sewerage has already been splashed in this area thus making it even more of a health hazard, so the price could exceed a million dolars.

I guess if I posted a question on here how much will it cost to fill my car with gas I would not get a decent guess either huh?

Thanks again, YOUR VERY welcome

I appreciate the picture that you sent. The ci piping that I have to replace is sticking out about 12 inches in length from the main drain hub. So in your saying that I should replace this ci with ci piping not PVC? Is there a way to loosen the ci pipe from the hub since at this time I am not able to turn it. Also what is the cost of this type of repair? Can you recomment a plumber in michigan?

I think the reply I sent you was taken incorrectly. I spoke with my friend prior to contacting this forum. Sorry for the confusion. I am just trying to make sure that I get the proper information to repair my home. I did not know that you were a licensed plumber prior to replying to you. Also my friend is not a licensed plumber he is a gc and just made the suggestions and I wanted to look further into the matter prior to taking action. Is there a was to loosen the current connection so that I may replace the piping myself or do you suggest that contact a plumber and let him handle the repair?

I can honestly say I never work fro GC's as they like the government ask for the lowest bid normally and you see how the government works.

Normally a GC has to guarantee their work for one year after completion and if something does fail the GC points to the various trades that worked on the job

MUCH like Hillery Clinton says she cant recollect and then has the gall to right about her memoirs (called selective amnesia).

If your not sure what to do hire the legitimate plumber watch her or him and the next time you will know if you want to tackle the job or not.

Cast Iron has proven longevity, does not promote fire or smoke and with the longer radius fittings makes for a long lasting quiet safe system that does not sag.

The only thing is make sure the cast even if it is NO HUB CI is not imported

The connections can be either caulked or used with No Hub couplings and NEVER with Fernco (IMHO) as I like the idea of rigid connections not a piece of rubber for integrity.

Considering this piping is going to be installed and possibly forgotten make sure the plumber knows about threaded galvanized rod and Clevis hangers and not a band iron specialist or worse tie wire.

Your home is an investment and you want it as maintenance free as possibe and looking for longevity.

Here is a picture of a NH installation with clean outs at the change of direction and clevis hangers. notice no sagging and how the clamps are stainless steel for a clean professional look.

Every joint can be taken apart if you have to make changes and have to snake the lines in the future

You cant turn the CI pipe because it is caulked in with lead and oakum.

You should contract a licensed plumber and have him do it.

About prices they vary as everyone has a different over head.

A plumber paying rent in Manhattan has to charge more then a gentleman working out of his home in another area of the country.

Pouring a lead joint is NOT for a DIY person
