I am having a similar problem as posted here http://www.bobvila.com/BBS/blackgreasyfloating_sludge_in_hot_water_supply_lines-Plumbing-1-T5605.html#5605

I have black greasy material in my hot water. When I touch the material it just leaves a black streak. Unfortunately, I do not see a braided stainless steel or copper connector like in the previous message. Do Whirlpool flame lock hot water heaters contain a lining that could disintegrate?

The Whirlpool folks say this is sediment, does this sound correct?

Anyone have any other suggestions?

Thanks. My hot water heater is in my basement. Would it be possible that there be any braided copper or stainless connectors between my crawl space and attic?

another place you might check maybe would be an expansion tank if you have one.

Thanks for the reply. I don't have an expansion tank.
