i just bought a new sump pump that requires a 1 1/4" hose to replace one that no longer works properly. the existing one has a 1" laundry hose, with no check valve, that discharges to a floor drain. This was set up by a previous owner, even though there is a pvc pipe set up to discharge water. The pipe goes across a foot or two then into the floor, not sure where the water ends up after that. looking at an older non-working pump with a 1 1/4" flexible discharge hose i noticed that the check valve was about a foot above floor level, where the flex hose attaches to the pvc pipe. is it ok to have the check valve that high up or should it be closer to the pump? all the instructions i've come across show it slightly above pump height.

The check could be located away from the sump pump but the instructions should have also mentioned an 1/8th inch hole drilled in the discharge piping after the pump and prior to the check to make sure the line does not become air bound
the difference would be over a foot. i wasn't sure whether it was better to have it closer to the pump or not. thanks for you help!
I too have had questions and issues about the check valve. I have had mine located right by the discharge port of the pump (as the instruction illustrations showed) but sometimes I believe the vibration of the pump loosens the rubber connecting hoses to the pvc discharge pipe. Also I believe the air bound issue may come into play creating more vibration than neccesary and the pump does not discharge from the well. I will move the valve a bit further away from the pipe and drill the venting hole as recommended. This makes perfect sense to me. Thnaks again.
