The water is going in all the wrong ways in our toilet. When it's flushed, water leaks out from behind, under and I think between the tank and bottom section of the tiolet. The water in the tank rises almost to the top of the bowl every time. Do I have a seal leaking or something along that lines?

If the tank is leaking between the tank and bowl then you need a tank rebuilding kit which consists of brass bolts (2 or 3) washers a Douglas valve (donut) gasket.

You also should adjust the fill valve level to be one inch below the over flow tube
