I have an addition that was desiged with a cathedral ceiling. Walls are 9' high, rafter length is around 14' from birds mouth to ridge and pitch of roof is 9/12. I have large beams 9' apart spaning from wall top to wall top to keep the walls plumb due to roof load. I have been wondering if I should put in additional collar beams to stregtnen the roof, but I rather not. Please offer any suggestions

Hi Walt,
I would have gotten to you sooner but I was gone with my back out. Try that with 6 children!!!
Anyway, what came to my thoughts as I was reading your post; how old is the addition? Do you think you NEED the additional support? Are you in an area where you receive major amounts of snow fall? Does it look like it has done any sagging prior to this? Basically, I wonder what first made you think that you might need the extra support?
If none of these apply then I don't believe I would add the extra. It would just be an extra expense and time consumer. Sort of like that old saying 'if it isn't broken, don't fix it'...
Hope this helps you out in some way. Let me know how things go.

Some have better luck next time around,
some don't, and some don't even try.
