Hello,
I am about to build an enclosed porch on the back of my house. I want to come out 20 feet with a flat slope roof. How do I make rafters this long? Do I double up wood for each rafter to extend it that long?
Also, Can I use 2 x 6 or do I need larger ones like 2 x 8 for the rafter boards?
Thanks for your help!

- Porch Roof Rafter Question
Warren, there is no way to answer this. We don't know anything about snow loads in your area or how you are attaching and supporting this roof.
A flat roof is a specialty item. Its shape gives it no structural advantage and it can be very heavy, depending on roofing membranes. Are you sure you don't have an alternative to flat? Will this match the rest of the house?

Thanks for replying! Sorry for my late reply though - had to change computers.
I'm in Savannah, GA so we get no snow. I was thinking I could vault it with rafters rather than a flat roof. And to support the rafters, I can put a 4x4 or 6x6 up the center against the back of my house in the center for support. And then the same on each 4 corners of the porch. And use smaller supports along the side every 5 feet.
Below is a picture of the back of my house. The center of where the porch is goes through a window. I could move that to the left of the window and put a support there. Its 22 feet wide for the porch and I want to come out about 15 feet atleast.
