We have a 3 yr old home that we'd like to put a basement into. The basement part is a-ok, finding space to put the stairs in on the main floor is the current dilema. The ideal area is an interior walled-off space next to the garage wall which has the furnace and hot water heater on the garage side. We have not broken through the interior walls, so we're not sure exactly what we'd be looking at. However, the air return vent is smack dab in the middle of one of the interior walls, and if we could move it over 2 feet, we think we'd have enough room to put in a "code" staircase. Question is can an air return be moved? What do we need to asses? Any advice is appreciated, thanks!
