I'm thinking about shutting down my weekend
house for 3 months this winter. What are the
steps I need to take? In terms of draining
pipes, etc. Is this information spelled out anywhere? What do I need to watch for when
closing down a house? Thanks.

Everything. Oil furnance. Hot water heater.
Plumbing. Water softener. Gas stove. Basically, I'm trying to find one resource that lists what needs to be done to shut down a house.

Actually Tom,...As long as your oil fired furnace is in good working condition you need not worry about water lines or anything mechanical in the house. Maintain about 45- 55* temps and no water should freeze. Turn the water tank to Vacation. Have the furnace checked to be sure it's running properly. If oil furnace,...Ask after they're done what the over fire draft is??? If he looks at you with a confused look,... The Check out was not done properly.... He will also wonder how do you know this terminology.....
