I am putting up a new wall to divide an existing room into an office and closet. Can the top plate of the new wall be nailed to the ceiling joists through the existing ceiling drywall? Informational books on framing suggest overlapping top plates, how do you accomplish this when the existing perpendicular top plates are already framed?

Any help is appreciated.
