We moved into an old school that was converted to lofts. They basically did the least amount of work in each space so we have a lot of "finishing" work to do - not to mention redoing the entire kitchen & bathroom. However, the issue we have right now is we want to redo the baseboards.

What they have right now looks like metal strips that have been painted white many, many times. The problem is that they go up the wall about an inch & out about an inch onto the floor. It's also not a continuous strip of baseboard, it stops & we have spots with no baseboards.

We'd love to rip it out & put in a regular baseboard, but the hardwood floors only extend to the edge of the baseboard & not to the wall so we'd have a gap between the baseboard & the floor. Any ideas?

I'm going to assume it's a paint finish to a wainscoat wall like typical old schools?

You can either use mdf pre-primed 1x6 or 1x8 most likely it would be 1x8, top that with a top cap if you like. There are many cap styles to choose from. Then use a cove or 1/4 round base shoe. That gets you out to the inch.

You can also use poplar or a paint grade 1x. mdf is more stable & takes paint better though.

Another option is to go build up. Rip 1/2 mdf into 2" strips. Place those on the wall first then place the 1x8 over them, then cap that. This will get you 1 1/4 out.

Go to kingofcrown (link below), select "stock lines" on that page select El & El in the frame, then select Misc. MDF then cap. The 733mul is one cap that would look great to top off a 3/4 (1x8) base & then use a 1/4 round shoe to match those lines.

Finally if the wainscoat is missing put it back, then the base that would get you out past the inch as well. Look over those options as well... but that is a higher budget cost.

Thanks! I think we'll try removing what's there & use the 1st idea. That should work! Thanks!!
